Course Description: The Advanced Placement (AP) English Literature class offers students the opportunity to take a college-level course while in high school. This course prepares students to take the AP English Literature Exam at the end of the school year. By passing this exam, students can receive advanced placement, course credit in English, or both when they enter college. To prepare students for the English Literature exam, students will engage in the careful reading of literary works, paying particular attention to syntax, diction and tone. They will consider a work’s structure, meaning, and value, and its relationship to contemporary experience as well as the context in which it was written. Through this close reading of selected texts, students will deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide meaning. Writing assignments, accordingly, will focus on the critical analysis of literature. There is a summer reading requirement for this course; the reading must be completed prior to the start of the school year. The ultimate goal of the enrollees should be the completion of a four-year Honors English sequence culminating in Honors Senior English: AP Literature and Composition. This course meets state of Illinois guidelines as a writing intensive course.
