Course Description: This course continues the focus on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills with an emphasis on critical thinking. The reading area focuses on world literature and uses terminology and concepts learned in Freshman English to analyze the following genres of literature: short stories, nonfiction, poetry, novels, and drama, including Shakespearean drama. The writing process is emphasized; writing discourse includes expository and argumentative essays, with continued attention to grammar and usage. There is a summer reading requirement for this course; the reading must be completed prior to the start of the school year. This course meets state of Illinois guidelines as a writing intensive course.
