Department Philosophy
Students should develop those skills of written and verbal articulation generally recognized by society as essential to becoming effective citizens in our rapidly changing culture. To foster the development of those skills, the English curriculum provides a comprehensive experience in communication with emphasis placed upon individual needs and goals. Required courses are designed to develop the fundamental skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Elective offerings provide each student an opportunity to actively pursue the areas of his/her individual interest. In addition, through the study of English, students should be guided through experiences which promote critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, independent thought, creative expression aesthetic appreciation, and a personal set of values.
