The Lockport Area Consortium for Substance Abuse Prevention came into existence in 1987 as a result of school and community concerns about increasing youth drug use and gang activity. The Consortium is a multi-district effort that has the support of the schools and communities in Crest Hill,Lockport, Lockport Township, Homer Glen, and Homer Township, Illinois. All Consortium programs are funded through a cooperative effort of the Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Act and the Drug Free Communities Support Program.
The mission of the Consortium is "To educate students, families, and key stakeholders to prevent and reduce youth use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs and increase positive behaviors and attitudes in order to create and sustain a safe and drug-free community."
State learning standards require drug prevention education in order for students to be "ready, willing, and able to learn." However, as schools, community agencies and law enforcement do their best to educate, entertain, and stem the flow of drugs into our schools and communities, statistics continue to show that parents and peers are have a most influence on a child's behaviors and activities.
In order for children to have the self-discipline and self-esteem to say "NO!" to drugs and refuse to participate in violent acts; positive messages, life skills, and opportunities to give back to the community must be offered.
Parent education, research-based curriculum, support programs, and community-wide education events are examples of Consortium activities that offer parents and students opportunities to become part of the solution.
Effective prevention cannot take place without you; the student and the parent. For more information on the science of drug and violence prevention and how you can help your community stay safe and drug free, check out the Consortium goals, programs, events and links.
